[HISTORY]

Gassho-zukuri is a kind of old building. Its origin is very old, and dates back to the Edo period. In Edo period, sericulture and many other industries already prevailed in Gokayama. So, people thought that Gassho-zukuri is proper for the workroom. Gassho-zukuri was registered as cultural world heritage site in December in 1995.

In winter, they have much snow in Gokayama. Occasionally they can see the first snow in middle of November. So, they hoped that they could stand the much snow and made the new style of house called Gassho-zukuri. The roof covered with white snow is very beautiful.
